Rotational Engineering Graduate at Boeing

My highlight so far has been being able to work with so many people, from students on, to academics to organise events for the Royal Aeronautical Society. It’s always great to work with likeminded individuals who all share a common goal. My experience at university has had many ups and downs, from fun social events to stressful nights in revising for exams, however I have met so many amazing people and know that I have made so many life-long friendships.

Why did you choose to study engineering?

I have always been interested in engineering, and when I was younger, I would try building things around my house. After reading a little bit more about the different engineering pathways you could take, I found it really fascinating how much aircraft has changed over the last century or so, and how engineering has become part of everyone’s daily lives.

What attracted you to study at the University of Nottingham?

When I first attended the open day, I was instantly attracted the campus and how easy it was to travel around it. I also really liked knowing a bit more about the course and knowing that I would have the chance to try out a variety of different modules and streams in Aerospace, as well as the engineering facilities. Having done some practical engineering work at my sixth form, I was good to see how I could apply that knowledge to practical sessions at university.

What were the highlights of your time at Nottingham?

Being in the committee for three different societies during my time at university has been one of my highlights! I was lucky enough to be in the committee of AeroSoc and the university’s Belly Dance Society during my second and third years and have been a committee member for the Royal Aeronautical Society since my second year. I am especially proud of being a part of Belly Dance Society, where I had the chance to go outside of my comfort zone and perform in front a large audience, which I hadn’t done in years! Furthermore, by being part of the RAeS, I was able to represent the university at the Farnborough Airshow in 2018, which was an amazing experience. All of these opportunities have allowed me to push past my comfort zone, make new friends and work on so many skills.

It took me a long time to realise that it is okay to ask questions! I was always worried that by asking questions, I would be pestering my lecturers, but they are very patient and helpful people and would rather you ask questions than keep struggling on a question or topic.

What advice would you give to current engineering students at Nottingham?

Apply for summer internships from first year onwards. I was rejected by Rolls-Royce in my first year, but this was valuable learning experience for my second year interview which I secured. From here I was offered another summer internship in 3rd year. This meant when it came to graduation and the graduate scheme, I was lucky enough to be selected during Covid. Besides the value in securing future employment, they were also really fun and I was paid real money!!!

You learn something new every day in engineering. It is constantly evolving and there is always something new to learn. Having worked in industry, I have learnt that although the same engineering principles are being applied, every project is different and customer requirements always vary. Engineering is applied in our everyday lives and working in the field will give you the chance to be an innovator, a trailblazer and also inspire others to follow in the same footsteps.

In the next five years, I am hoping to be working at an engineering company or completing an engineering PhD! I am equally interested in research as well as the practical application of theory, so I would be happy to do either of them at some point in the future. I would love to be able to work in a team that will bring a positive change to the way we work and travel. It would be amazing to apply any knowledge from university or industry work to any career path I take in the future.
