Food delivery pannier

The aim of my design was to create a new category of food delivery pannier, one that provides versatile and unique utility to the hard working rider and helps to deliver a better quality product to the customer. Current market solutions haven’t adapted to meet the progressing demands of the food delivery industry and the growing expectations of their customers. By taking the weight off rider’s backs, they can deliver more and for longer; but the design of the pannier still needed to be adapted to suit food deliveries.

When the two halves are combined in the upwards position the pannier is ideal for carrying pizzas and larger items that need the space. But by releasing latches and unfolding the product on its hinges it converts into two smaller and completely separated containers. This gives the rider further options for food storage, such as to separate liquids and dry food, hot and cold items, foods with special dietary requirements, or two different pickup orders entirely. The smaller space also means smaller items have less room to be shaken around in and air around them for heat to be lost. An array of latches and hinges allow the lids to convert between the two positions.

Unlike normal panniers, this design incorporates a custom rack that allows it to fit to any bike rack but still be exceptionally fast and secure to take on and off. Internal nets allow food to be kept in place when needed and stay out the way when not in use. A large, ergonomic handle allows the rider to confidently carry the product when moving between delivery pickups and drop-offs on foot.

The product has parts made with injection moulded polypropylene, rotationally moulded polyethylene with a polyurethane foam filling and cut and folded steel.

Student Biography

Throughout my degree I have been pushed to develop my craft, whether that's improving technical skills and engineering knowledge or expanding my ability look at problems with a wider range of ideas and develop more creative solutions.

In this project I have learned to better work independently and how my work can greatly improve with purpose and plan. As I saw my idea grow and change so much, compared to other projects, it was humbling to see my design not turn out as similar as I imagined to my initial idea.

I often find creating renderings to be the most enjoyable part of most project. It’s the stage where ideas and concepts are suddenly brought much more to life, and I enjoy the creativeness that comes with discovering how the design’s features and details can be best communicated.
