LightWeight – Interior Design Inspired Functional Cable Machine for Home Use

LightWeight is a functional cable machine for home use, designed in a way to take up as little footprint as possible, while visually echoing the design language of modern home interiors. The product is designed for users who want to exercise at home for reasons including concern about hygiene levels in commercial gyms, flexibility with work, and the desire to have an attractive piece of equipment, compared to other products on the market.

The key features of the design include a height adjustable dual pulley, an adjustable weight stack up to 100kg, a foldable low profile weight bench which can be stored against the side of the unit when not in use, and storage pegs for the cable attachments on the other side of the unit. In terms of the overall design, LightWeight has been inspired by some of the key interior design trends of 2022, including the use of the natural colours and textures of wood to introduce warmth and a sense of the outside environment, especially since people more frequently find themselves working from home.

The pulley head can be adjusted to 21 different heights at 100mm increments between 115mm and 2115mm from floor level. This means users of all different heights, both male and female will be able to carry out a range of seated and standing exercises.

The weight lifted can be selected in 5kg increments between 5kg and 100kg. This means users, from weak to strong can carry out a wide range of exercises depending on what their fitness goals are.

The folding bench was designed to be as strong but slim as possible. The bench upholstery is available in a range of colours to best suit the users’ own preferences and environment the product will be placed in. The legs are held closed by neodymium magnets embedded in the wooden base of the bench. The bench can be hung up on the dedicated rail on the side of the main unit using the hook on the underside of the bench. The cable attachments which hang on the other side of the unit include a lat-pulldown bar, a tricep pushdown bar, a double-D handle, 2x individual cable handles, a rope attachment and a set of carabiners.

Student Biography

Hi, I’m Sachin, and I’m a design engineer. I enjoy taking problems and finding creative and innovative solutions which are technically feasible. My decision to study Product Design and Manufacture at Nottingham was fuelled by my love for creativity, interest in the technical workings of the products I use every day, and the desire to help create solutions to problems that real users face.

I have 3 key areas of interest within the design cycle. Initial concept ideation is something I find genuinely fun and interesting as it allows me to explore my creativity and think to myself, “How can this problem be tackled differently?” Putting a pen to paper and sketching any and every idea which comes to mind is always good to look at and consider which can be taken further into the design process. 3D modelling using CAD packages is a strong area of mine, as I have been using Solidworks for nearly 10 years. This allows me to showcase my attention to detail and logic, while building highly detailed, robust, and technically accurate CAD models in the most time-efficient method possible. Finally, I love creating the visuals for final designs. I love taking the time to find all the right angles, playing with lighting environments and overall, presenting a product which looks beautiful, something a user would want to invest in. This ties in with my interest in psychology, more specifically cognitive ergonomics.

My main areas of product interest include health and fitness, and interior design and furniture. My passion for health and fitness related design stems from my love for sport, and my passion for interior design and furniture comes from an early love for architecture. My Major Project allowed me to fuse my interests into one project which allowed me to thoroughly enjoy and become invested in the whole design process.
