A smart fan designed to improve sleep by cooling the body to promote a healthy circadian rhythm.

My name is Aidan Burnett and I am a 21 year old Product design and manufacture student, studying at the university of Nottingham. I am from South-West London, which is where I went to school to achieve ABB in my A levels: Design and Technology, Art and Maths, respectively.

I have always had a passion for design and creativity. After university, I am hoping to find a career in property development as I have many years of experience working on houses and have amassed the skills needed to work in this area. Property development is a very hands on and laborious, creative process, which I enjoy. The skills that I have acquired from this course will massively help me with property development when designing individual and unique features within properties; weather it’s a creative solution for something or a feature that requires aesthetic consideration.

CHiLL

CHiLL is a smart fan that is tailored specifically for use in a bed. It was designed to improve sleep by cooling the body to promote a healthy circadian rhythm. Traditional fanning options will dry out your skin if they blow air on it for a prolonged period – such as when sleeping. This is why CHiLL has an extra layer of filtration that deposits moisture into the air as the air is drawn through it. A twisting cap at the end of the fan allows the user to easily transport the water from the tank and deposit it in the filter. This allows the user to enjoy more humid air that will be cooler than the air in the room.

One key aim when designing CHiLL was to give the user maximum freedom when directing the fan’s airflow, ensuring a comfortable night's sleep. CHiLL has achieved this firstly in is telescopic airflow outlet, which allows the user to pull the airflow outlet to the full width of their bed. Secondly, CHiLL can spin out from behind the bed and blow air across the bed. Additionally, CHiLL’s airflow outlet can spin around 360 degrees. These key features help achieve an even airflow coverage across the user's whole body.

CHiLL uses sound resonance chambers as well as other noise reduction components to reduce the noise created by the fan so that the user can listen to their own white noise by connecting to the built in speakers through the CHiLL app. The app will give you popular white noises to choose from, or the option to connect your phone to play your own white noises or music. The app can also be used to set an alarm for the clock in the centre of the fan. This clock face uses auto-rotation technology to ensure that the clock digits are always the correct way up, no matter the orientation of the air outlet. The user can also use the app to control the lights situated on the back of the fan by adjusting the brightness and changing the colour to anything on the white-red spectrum. Red light helps assist the body with melatonin production which will help regulate your circadian rhythm and adjust your body into a sleep phase.
