Combating fast fashion and encouraging sustainability with a simple to use sewing machine.

Emma-Hill-cropped

I am passionate about sustainability, creativity and problem solving. I chose to study PDM because it allowed me to explore each of these areas. During my placement year I worked for Mondelez International, in the seasonal packaging department. It was great to be a part of a team who created new packaging solutions for huge brands such as Cadbury. After university I will be joining a graduate scheme, working as a project manager in the construction industry.

EASYSEW Sewing Machine

The EASYSEW machine is a device for people with no prior knowledge of sewing machines who need to alter or repair their clothes.

Many people choose to buy new clothes rather than repairing the ones that they already have. The fast fashion industry makes this a cheap, quick and easy solution; however, this is not sustainable. I created this device to make using a sewing machine to alter and repair clothing a better option.

This device is simple to use with explicit instructions for threading and intuitive controls, meaning no previous experience with a sewing machine is required. It is also aimed at the DIY market rather than the crafting market, following the shared battery format that is used by most common power tool brands, this makes it less intimidating to users who see sewing as a task rather than a hobby. The size was also a large consideration, this machine is significantly smaller than conventional sewing machines whilst still having the majority of the functionality meaning users can repair a wide range of items and be able to store the machine with ease.
