Hello! I’m Isi, a vivacious, communicative and exceptionally hardworking final year Product Design Engineering student at the University of Nottingham.  I thrive off the challenges and variety that design entails and respond well to constructive criticism as I’m constantly striving to improve my skill set.

I am a firm believer in human-centred design, and endeavour to innovate contemporary products that improve peoples’ lives.  My approach to design is holistic, as I strive to find sustainable solutions that support a circular economy with a synergy for aesthetic and manufacturing.

When I’m not in the studio, I am an avid jazz and a cappella singer.  As the singer in a band, I am a de facto leader and this experience together with my enthusiasm for performing has helped me excel in teamwork and presenting.

Suave

Suave is an upright garment steamer designed for quick and efficient use.  The primary customer base consists of household consumers, and professionals who are keen to look smart for work but are often in a rush when getting dressed in the morning.

The traditional iron is timely to set up and pack away, meaning people typically wait until they have several garments to iron in one sitting.  Whereas Suave encourages users to remove creases from their chosen outfit for the day, as part of their daily morning routine.  This splits up the laborious task of de-wrinkling garments, as the product is designed with the intention that users only ever steam 1-3 garments in a row.  Consequently, Suave better meets the needs of the modern-day consumer, as now more than ever people lead busy lives, leaving minimal time for domestic chores.

Part of making Suave quick to use, was designing for a bedroom environment, so that it is kept near to where clothes are stored.  Suave uses clean, simple, minimalist design language so that it compliments any bedroom environment.

It is a free-standing device that provides a place to hang garments from to avoid damp, given most walls and doors in bedrooms are made from porous materials and so would not respond well to steam being directly applied repeatedly.  Suave collapses down to just 59cm in height and can extend to as tall as 6ft 3inches when fully extended.  I designed Suave to be as compact as possible, so that it would be unobtrusive when placed in a bedroom.

How does Suave work?

Suave takes 35 seconds to heat up after pressing the power button.  Next, simply press down on the dome, to release the sprung mechanism inside.  When the sprung mechanism is released, the dome will pop up 40mm, leaving adequate room for users to comfortably position their hands in the gap and finish lifting the dome up to fully open Suave.  Lock the telescopic pole to your preferred height, unfold the hanger, and slide the connector across to lock the hanger in its open orientation.  Next, dress the hanger with your garment, lift the handle off the dome, and slide the steam button to steam away.
