Flexibly-designed sleep spaces to comfortably accommodate passengers at an airport.

Anna Herritty

Hello, I’m Anna and I’m a design engineer. I have always enjoyed taking a creative approach to problem solving and enjoy learning new skills.

While at school I really enjoyed maths as well as art and so found PDM to be the perfect fit to utilise my skill set and have really enjoyed the technical side of product development and manufacture. I am looking forward returning to Worcester Bosch, where I completed my placement year, to continue my career as Product Engineer.

SnugSpace

The “SnugSpace” by “Aeropia” is a new solution to the lack of private sleeping areas outside of airport lounges in the UK. Balancing passenger requirements for comfort, privacy and luggage security with operator requirements for passenger safety and practicality SnugSpace units are flexibly designed to comfortably accommodate up to 6 passengers and can be easily transported around the airport to adapt to changing customer demand.

Each SnugSpace unit comprises three sections: 2 end nook chairs and a central bench seat. The sections can be joined in multiple configurations using custom latches.

When the two end nooks are joined, they provide a single unit in which 2 people can lay completely flat to rest (or 4 in a semi- reclined position). Each nook is hooded, creating a sense of privacy for the user together with some ambient noise reduction, and is equipped with 4 multi-country charging sockets, 2 USB ports, 2 USB-C ports, a display screen of the live departures board and adjustable LED ambient lighting.

Each nook also features a polycarbonate window with privacy film, allowing the user to see out into the surrounding space without allowing others to see in, and ottoman style luggage storage, accessed by raising the seat cushion, which can accommodate up 2 large pieces of hand luggage.

The nooks are comfortably cushioned with layered polyurethane foam and memory foam mattresses and upholstered with a faux leather material which can withstand bleach cleaning. For security and practicality, the depth of the hood is designed so that only head and upper torso of the user is shielded, this enables airport security and fellow passengers to easily ascertain if the unit is occupied. For security purposes stored luggage is visible to airport security staff and fellow passengers through polycarbonate windows in the base of the unit.

When the bench seat is inserted between the two end nooks, the design becomes more accessible, providing ample space for transfer into the unit.

When used alone, the bench can provide upright seating for 2-3 people, alternatively it can be connected to a single end nook section to create chaise lounge style seating for 1-2 passengers.

The “SnugSpace” is made to order and as such can be fully customised to specific airlines/airport branding, with different colour options available for both the mattress fabric and exterior upholstery. Furthermore, all the exterior hardware (rivets, logo and latches) can be provided in black, silver or gold to compliment the desired aesthetic.
