An electric commuter tricycle designed at overcoming the barriers to cycling.

Finn Reilly-McQueen

Hi, I’m Finn. I’m a year 4 student on the Product Design and Manufacture course at Nottingham.

My favourite part of my degree has been project work, specifically generating broad, creative ideas and developing them into exciting yet feasible solutions to problems. The combination of creative and more engineering based content that the course at Nottingham provides really appealed to my strengths and interests.

I find the intersection between design, engineering and performance sport exciting and engaging. I have worked on several personal side projects during university, and love to combine my design and technical skills with my experience as a high-level kayak athlete to produce useful training and racing products.

I’m excited to take the skills I have developed over four years at Nottingham into industry and begin to work on some live projects.

ROULEUR – An Electric Commuter Tricycle

As part of the UK government's net zero goals, one half of all journeys in our towns and cities should be completed via active travel by 2030. With climate change pressures, a cost-of-living crisis and a privatised rail network, there is a need for more low cost, sustainable, active transport methods. So, why are more people not riding bicycles?

Through research, I found that the main barriers to increased commuter cycling are as follows:

Safety - Feeling unsafe on the roads, especially around other road users.

Visibility – Being visible and seen in all conditions.

Maintenance – Spending excessive time fixing bikes or having mechanical problems during use.

Storage – Riders having the ability to carry belongings easily on a bike, while keeping them dry and safe.

ROUlEUR is an electric, commuter tricycle, designed to solve these problems, increase participation, and overcome the barriers associated with active travel.

By utilising three wheels, ROULEUR increases rider stability by minimising topple-risk. It takes up more space on the road than a 2-wheeler, forcing drivers to make space when overtaking and increasing rider safety. It includes a 20L waterproof storage box, enabling a large amount of luggage to be transported easily and safely. The design also has an integrated front and rear lighting system, powered by the battery. This ensures that riders are never caught in the dark without lights.

ROULEUR incorporates riser handlebars, ergonomic hand grips and twist gear shifters which induce a comfortable, highly visible riding position. An adjustable saddle, in addition to three options for frame size ensures prospective users of all sizes are accommodated.

Equipped with a 500wh battery, ROULEUR has an assisted range of up to 60km on a single charge. A powerful mid drive motor tops up the rider’s pedalling power, and assists up to speeds of 15.5mph, the UK and EU legal limit. Motor settings are configured through an app, which also enables the motor to be locked, eliminating the risk of ride-off theft.

Reducing maintenance requirements was a priority in component selection for the drivetrain of the tricycle. A drivebelt and internal gear hub replace a conventional chain and derailleur system. These last far longer, work well in poor conditions, and require minimal maintenance. Toppling in corners is commonly associated with tricycles, however ROULEUR eliminates this issue by utilising suspension dampers which, coupled with a rear differential, induce safe, topple-free cornering.

ROULEUR is a unique, innovative solution to the main issues associated with active travel commuting, and aims to encourage participation in non-cyclists through it’s useful, comfortable and simple design.
