A practical trolley, enabling students to carry multiple, heavy shopping bags.

Will McGuinness profile

Hi! I’m Will, a hardworking and motivated designer aiming to achieve the best I can in all my work. Having a strong artistic background combined with practical problem solving skills has led me to pursue a career in design, as it allows me to demonstrate my creativity within a functioning product that has a positive impact on others. I see myself as a highly creative individual; in my spare time I enjoy drawing and painting and have won the Solihull Society of Arts Award.

I have thoroughly enjoyed studying at the University of Nottingham for the past four years. My degree has equipped me with a blend of valuable skills that span across the whole design process, from ideation through to manufacture. A particular area of design that I have developed a passion for is ergonomics and user-centred design.

I look forward to applying the skills that I have acquired throughout my studies in real projects, within the design industry.

Rollmate – A Student Shopper

The term ‘Granny Trolley’ is commonly used to refer to personal shopping trolleys, highlighting that they are associated with elderly users, particularly women. User-based and market research indicated that this nickname acts as a deterrent to younger populations, consequently preventing them from using said products. They fear that the product would ‘make them look 'old’. However, there are many individuals within this younger generation that would greatly benefit from ‘Granny trolleys’, particularly university students. This is due to the fact that a large population of students do not have access to a car whilst studying, and as such, must rely on public transport or simply walking, to carry multiple heavy shopping bags home.

ROLLMATE is a ‘Granny Trolley’ disguised in an attractive, modernised design for students. A minimalist, sleek aesthetic has been incorporated to achieve this. The products primary selling point is its ability to convert from a rucksack into a personal shopping trolley with ease, thus enabling students to transport the product to the supermarket without the fear of embarrassment. Once at the supermarket, the student can convert the rucksack into the trolley form, meaning they can easily transport all their shopping home with minimal effort and in style.

The trolley contains an internal foldable polyester canvas bag which can hold up to 15L, which is more than enough capacity for an average student shop, with ample extra space for additional items. This bag neatly compacts towards the internal arm which rotates back and is stored within the rear shell of the design when it is in its rucksack form.

Another problem that students face is the lack of storage space within their crowded student homes. ROLLMATE eliminates this through its ability to compact into a rucksack, and can therefore be stored out of the way.

ROLLMATE consists of two main rigid shells, which are made of high-quality Polycarbonate. This provides the product with a lightweight yet strong body with an attractive high gloss finish. They are reinforced with lightweight internal Aluminium 1050 sheets.
