Archie Chapman

Hello, I'm Archie. I was motivated to study Product Design and Manufacture by a passion for combining creative problem-solving with analytical skills. Throughout my course, I have particularly enjoyed the creative freedom afforded in tackling problem-solving tasks, allowing me to generate innovative solutions. My major project, the Stylus Auto, has been especially rewarding as it allowed me to utilise all the skills I have gained over my years of study to produce a refined final result.

Additionally, my year in industry working with Worcester Bosch as a design engineer provided valuable practical experience, further enhancing my attention to detail in problem solving tasks.

Following the completion of my studies I will be undertaking a graduate project management consultant position in the construction industry.

Stylus Auto – Insulin Delivery Device

The Stylus Auto is an automated insulin delivery device designed to address the critical challenges faced by individuals managing diabetes.

The problem

As the diabetes population increases, the need for effective management solutions is increasingly critical. 40% of people with diabetes state they have difficulty administering their own insulin, with over 10,000 people requiring daily, or twice daily visits from community nurses for insulin injection. This was an issue highlighted to me by my mum- a community nurse for the NHS.

Traditional insulin pens often require precise manual dexterity and visual acuity, which can be significant barriers for many users, especially those with reduced vision and dexterity- common side effects of diabetes (diabetic retinopathy and neuropathy). The Stylus Auto aims to eliminate these obstacles by providing an intuitive, user-friendly solution that enhances both accuracy and convenience in insulin administration.

Design features

Automated Injection System: At the core of the Stylus Auto is a sophisticated linear actuator system powered by a NEMA 6 stepper motor and a custom piston assembly. This system automates the insulin injection process, removing the need for manual force and ensuring precise dosing with an accuracy of 5%. The device is capable of performing up to 10,000 injection cycles, guaranteeing long-term reliability.

Accessible User Interface: The device features a large, high-contrast LCD screen that displays essential information in black text on a white backlit background, making it easily readable in various lighting conditions. The interface includes three tactile buttons with raised symbols, designed to be easily identifiable and operable by users with reduced vision or dexterity.

Rechargeable Battery: To address the environmental impact of disposable insulin pens, the Stylus Auto is equipped with a 130mAh rechargeable lithium polymer battery. This battery provides up to one month of use per charge and can be conveniently recharged via a USB-C port, which allows for easy connection in any orientation.

Compact and Durable Design: The internal components are housed within an injection-moulded polycarbonate chassis, providing both strength and structural integrity. The device's compact dimensions ensure it is portable and can be easily stored in a bag or pocket, allowing for discreet and convenient use anywhere.

Responsible Design: Emphasising sustainability, the Stylus Auto is designed for easy disassembly and repair. The use of hardware instead of adhesives facilitates recycling and extends the product’s lifespan. The main body is assembled with Torx screws to prevent unauthorized disassembly and ensure safety. The outer cover, made from vacuum metalized polypropylene, provides a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish.
