Qicheng Liu

Hi I’m Qicheng Liu, a year three product design student at University of Nottingham. Product design to me is a process exploring the users as well as exploring myself. Insights arise from research help me develop a rational understanding of how user thinks and behaves, while in the design phases I keep refining my mindset. I especially enjoy the refinement work and rendering. Based on ideas, refinement carves every single detail in a careful manner, as a result of which a product becomes more realistic and vivid. Similarly, rendering brings product to life, giving a full illustration of all the designs and interaction. Design bring about sense of achievement to me, especially in these phases. Expecting to graduate in July, I’m looking for a summer intern opportunity from 4 weeks to 6 weeks.

BEACON - a smart bus stop

Public transport is considerably a cheaper and more sustainable way of transportation, especially buses. However, there is only a quarter of the UK population use buses regularly, which refers to more than once in a month. Relook at the buses, they are upgrading once in a while, each time with new features in terms of user experience, accessibility, sustainability and etc. However, as supporting facilities, bus stop are always less prioritized. Current bus stops in UK have little concern on information delivery, passenger experience and accessibility. The research and design is especially conducted in these aspects to give a potential solution as a smart bus stop. This smart bus stop aims to enhance passengers’ experience when waiting for the busses as well as motivate more people to use buses. A STOP BUS system is designed to relieve passengers’ nerve by sending ‘STOP’ or ‘STOP AND RAMP’ request to bus drivers through information processing. With a simple press on the button, no matter physical or digital ones, passengers can just sit there and wait for the bus to stop. Bus information displays will also update to reduce repeat operation. The other prominent feature is the accessible area, in which multimedia information is available for people with disabilities, including upcoming bus information display, upcoming bus information speaker and accessible STOP AND RAMP button. ADA standard handrail and a wider, more comfortable auto rebound seat are also designed for accessible purpose. These designs enhance passengers’ experience when waiting for the buses, as well as their confidence. Other features include solar panels, display in front of seating area, touch screen for browsing and etc. This smart bus stops will be firstly generalized in UK market, starting from city areas, then potentially rural areas and other countries.
