James McFarland

Hello, my name is James.

I am currently pursuing an occupation in Product Design. From a young age, I have been drawn to the world of creativity and problem-solving. This fascination naturally steered me towards the field of design, where I could delve deeper into transforming innovative ideas into tangible realities.

Throughout my academic journey, I have expressed my passion for bringing ideas to life, developing a wider understanding of not just good design but manufacturing capabilities and how to execute a client's vision. I particularly thrive in the process of bridging the gap between conceptualising designs in a CAD format and creating physical prototypes. This phase allows me to explore the intricacies of design, from initial inspiration to the final product refinement.

As a product design student, I am driven by a desire for innovation and excellence looking to enhance user experiences and deliver innovative solutions. My goal is to continually seek new ways to elevate product functionality and aesthetics.

In summary, my journey as an aspiring product designer is characterised by a deep-seated passion for creativity and problem-solving, coupled with a dedication to delivering impactful solutions.

I am eager to utilise my skills gained over my time at the University of Nottingham into the workplace, to contribute to the ever-evolving landscape of design.

All Terrain

The aim of this project was to address the issue of accidental drownings at inland bodies of water and unsupervised coastal areas, by equipping the public with a more efficient tool for safe and effective rescues. Initial research revealed that nearly 50% of accidental drownings in the UK are linked to running and walking activities. This insight led to the development of the All Terrain Rescue Rucksack, a product designed to blend safety with the primary function required by these activities.

The All Terrain Rescue Rucksack is a multi-functional safety device disguised as a modular runners rucksack. Its design ensures users are more likely to carry it, as it serves a useful purpose beyond being a safety product. The rucksack is specifically designed to fit runners, with a close, tight fit to prevent movement during activity. This secure fit supports the integrated lifejacket, ensuring the inflated bladder remains close to the user's body, providing proper support in water.

A key feature of the product is its 150N lifejacket, capable of turning a casualty onto their back, even when fully clothed and in harsh weather conditions. This is crucial, as many drowning victims are competent swimmers who succumb to cold water shock, becoming submerged within minutes. The lifejacket is designed to take control and position the user safely, mitigating the effects of cold-water shock.

The bladder is inflated using a 33g CO2 canister, activated by a M2 manual Hammar inflator. Users have the option to replace this with an automatic valve, depending on their preference and activity. The bladder itself is constructed from polyurethane-coated nylon, while the rucksack is made from X-Pac VX21, a 100% climate-neutral, low-stretch, waterproof fabric with a 210-denier face. Additionally, CORDURA re/Cor RN66, a 100% post-industrial recycled nylon 6-6, is used, providing strength and durability.

This product not only provides a safer experience for the user but also opens up potential for new designs that offer useful functions for other activities due to its modular design aspect. The rucksack can be removed using metal poppers at the top and bottom corners of the design, allowing the user to wear the device as a standalone lifejacket. This modularity is particularly useful as it enhances the product's versatility and appeal across different user groups and scenarios. This flexibility ensures that the All Terrain Rescue Rucksack can evolve with the user, providing continuous value and enhancing safety across various outdoor activities.
