Peter Quine

I decided to study product design as it balanced my forte of maths and analytical problem solving with my more creative hobbies and interests. Throughout the course of the degree, I have found that these two aspects have worked in harmony in assisting my work both on course and on my placement year at Centreline Design and Manufacture. I have continuously enjoyed the course, developing ideas, improving existing products and creating whole new ones. This extends especially into my major project which gave me the opportunity to combine my love of coffee, hiking and travel filling a gap in the market with a product that I have been wanting for a while.

The area of the process that I find most enjoyable is the development stage of the project. I find that working through the process and ensuring the product is comfortable and enjoyable through iterative design, prototyping and testing is both satisfying and reassuring. In this, my major project the use of prototyping to test the comfortable use and the improvement in the spout’s pouring quality was an incredibly enjoyable part of the process.

TURAS. The Portable Coffee Brewing Set

The aim for the project was to fill the gap in the market for portable equipment to brew pour over coffee. The existing equipment is bulky and inconvenient to travel with. The core goals of the project were to produce a high-quality product in line with the style and build quality of the existing coffee market equipment. The finished assembly needs to be compact but still comfortable to use without fiddly mechanisms. The final primary goal was to include a V60 brewer as it is the most effective device to brew high quality coffee.

The final project contains a kettle, mug, grinder, stove, thermometer, scales and V60 brewer. All these components are secured by the central ring with rubber grips, this ring also functions as a base for the brewer as well as a centring element for the scales. The products are primarily made from metal with a lot of it being made from 410 stainless steel for its magnetic properties. The leather grips connect with the bodies with magnets built into them. The product covers all the steps of the coffee brewing process, starting with measuring the coffee and the water, the beans are then ground fresh, the water heated in the kettle on the stove and then it all comes together in the brewer

The final part of the product was two cases, a larger and a smaller one. The larger includes a case for beans or sugar and both the larger and smaller cases have a loop on the back to attach a karabiner to a backpack with and they both have a microfiber towel to dry down the product after its finished being used.
