Black History Month
Welcome to our celebration of Black History Month (BHM), where we’re showcasing the achievements of a number of our Black engineers and architects, alumni, staff, and students.
Meet our alumni, staff and students
Read Sam Kingman's statement (Pro-Vice Chancellor for Engineering)
Engineers and architects work to produce innovative solutions to problems. Diverse teams produce better solutions, so we want to highlight some of our community contributing to making the world a better place.
- 24.9% of all UK turnover related to engineering
- 8% of professional engineers are women
- 6% are from BAME backgrounds
- 1% of architects are Black
- 29% of architects overall are women
(we acknowledge the challenges of data sets because the number of Black engineers are a subset of this group).
We need more Black engineers and architects and to improve the visibility of our existing Black community to provide role models for the next generation.
It is the responsibility of all parts of the architecture and engineering supply chain, schools, colleges, universities, and employers to address our sector’s inclusion challenges and only by working in collaboration will we address these issues.
We are making progress and I am proud that the Faculty of Engineering has been able to contribute to this through our work in the EPSRC Inclusion Matters project STEMM Change. Here we are uncovering barriers and developing revolutionary, long-term solutions to diversify our workplaces. We are committed to the University’s work to improve racial equality, contributing towards the work of the Race Equality Chartermark group.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Faculty of Engineering
We value all of our staff and students within the Faculty and want to ensure that they feel valued. To ensure everyone with the faculty feels valued we have set up an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team. There mission is to encourage everyone to recognise their full potential in order to lead themselves to success.
Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Vision Statement
“To create a faculty culture of equality, diversity and inclusion, where these values are fully embraced, where all students and staff are made to feel valued and work in an environment of mutual respect.”
