Space Systems and Astrodynamics

Supervisors: Dr Chantal Cappelletti and Dr Nishanth Pushparaj

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD within the Faculty of Engineering in the Nottingham Geospatial Institute research group at the University of Nottingham. This opportunity is ideal for motivated and enthusiastic candidates passionate about advancing space systems engineering and astrodynamics.

PhD project description

This PhD will focus on formation flying, rendezvous, and in-orbit operations incorporating astrodynamics and systems design. The research will explore trajectory optimization, robust guidance, navigation and control systems, and simulation of in-orbit docking and coordinated maneuvers. These critical areas aim to advance the capabilities of collaborative satellite operations and in-orbit servicing missions.

The research will also align with broader topics within the group such as:

  • Miniaturised satellite technologies
  • GNSS
  • Remote-sensing
  • Data-driven astrodynamics
  • Space mission design
  • Solar sails
  • Micro-thrusters for CubeSats
  • Advanced attitude control
  • Image-based orbital determination
  • Inter-satellite communications
  • Space robotics

These contributions support efforts in space situational awareness, climate change mitigation, lunar communications, and nanosatellite-enabled deep-space exploration.

Funding support

This studentship offers full funding including tuition fees and a stipend for 3 or 3.5 years, depending on the topic and subject to funding approval.

Candidate requirements

Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical skills and a keen interest in satellite systems or machine learning in space research. Proficiency in coding languages such as MATLAB, C/C++, Python, or similar is essential, alongside excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate in an international, interdisciplinary team.

Eligibility and how to apply

  • Eligible applicants must hold a UK Higher Education “Home Fee” status or satisfy the EU residency requirement of three years
  • Applicants should possess a first-class or upper-second-class honors degree in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, electronics or communication engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field
  • Candidates with an MRes or MSc in a relevant field are encouraged to apply
  • Project start date: October 2025. An early start is possible
  • Closing date for applications: 14 February 2025
  • To apply: Send a CV, one-page research statement and covering email to cubesats@nottingham.ac.uk or contact one of the supervisors - Dr Chantal Cappelletti and Dr Nishanth Pushparaj
  • Informal inquiries can be directed to cubesats@nottingham.ac.uk

While this studentship is fully funded (tuition fee and stipend) for eligible candidates, we also welcome applications from self-supported or sponsored students who are enthusiastic about contributing to cutting-edge research in space systems engineering and astrodynamics.

We strongly encourage applications from diverse backgrounds to foster an inclusive and equitable research environment. Diversity enhances creativity, productivity, and the quality of our work leading to a more profound societal and economic impact. The Faculty of Engineering is proud to hold an Athena SWAN Gold Award reflecting our commitment to supporting and advancing women’s careers in engineering.
