Gregoria Matorras de San Martín

Biographical details

Born in Paredes de Nava, Spain, on 12 March 1738, she was the daughter of María del Sur and Domingo Matorras of noble blood. They moved to Buenos Aires in 1767 where she married Juan de San Martín on 1 October 1770. They were transferred to Yapeyú, where José Francisco de San Martín was born. They returned to Spain some years later where Juan died. She managed to educate their four children. On 1 June 1803, in Madrid, she testified "puedo asegurar que el que menos costo me ha sido el don José Francisco". She died in Orense, Spain in 1813. (Sosa de Newton, 396)
