She was with Hidalgo in Jalisco, dressed as a captain. This mysterious figure was much discussed and rumours circulated that she was Ferdinand VII who had escaped from France. Hamill believes that she was, in fact, trying to secure the release of a relative. (Hamill, 204, 248)
