Biographical details

A US officer in the US/ Mexico War whose letters home to his wife were published in 1811. He was part of the North American Army that marched from Veracruz to Mexico City and provides descriptions of the landscape (especially the volcanoes), and the Mexican people he met on his campaigns. He also tells of struggles against chills, fevers, the “nortes” and the constant hope for letters. He was injured at the battle of Chapeltepec and was sent home in October 1847. (Anderson)
