Biographical details

He was the head of the Larraín clan in Chile, a group that was known as the Eight Hundred, indicating its size. They were in favour of independence but their size and influence put them against the Carreras. He offended José Miguel Carrera in 1811 by referring to the Carreras' lesser social status. (Clissold, 93-94)
