Other names/titles:

Biographical details

Clarinda Porto da Fontoura was married in 1829 to Antônio Vicente da Fontoura (1807-1860) a civilian leader, and later Chief of Police on the Farroupilha Republican side during the Farroupilha War of Rio Grande do Sul (1835-45). The couple had thirteen children. His extensive correspondence with his wife during the war has survived. It affords a testimony to the affection between them and their painful separation by the war, as well as detailing the outdoor work on the plantation that women undertook during the war in their husbands’ absences (Silveira, 70, Flores, 48-9).
