Biographical details

Eugênia Menezes is connected with the Farroupilha War of Rio Grande do Sul (1835-45). She took care of the sick and wounded after the decisive Farroupilha Republican victory at the Battle of Seival in 1836 which led to the proclamation of an independent Republic of Rio Grande do Sul that same year. She is believed to have married at the age of sixty to a flamboyant Uruguayan gambler called Zeferino Uru, who spent much of her fortune. He was killed shortly afterwards (Silveira, 72).
