Biographical details

Maria Dorotéia de Seixas was born in Ouro Preto (then Vila Rica and the capital of Minas Gerais) on 8 November 1767, the daughter of Balthasar José Mayrink and Maria Dorotéia Joaquina de Seixas (Sabino, 119-120). Like her fellow “mineira” Bárbara Heliodora, Maria is known as a muse of the Inconfidência Mineira. She was courted by the poet Tomás Antônio Gonzaga, but he was arrested for his involvement in the Inconfidência Mineira before they were married. He was subsequently exiled to Mozambique in 1792 (Silva, 179). “Marília” is the name Gonzaga gave to Maria Dorotéia and “Dirceu” is the name she gave him. Hence she is known as Marília de Dirceu, and this is also the title of one of Gonzaga’s best known poems written in homage to his love.
