Biography:
He was born in Villa de Rosario de Cúcuta on 27 October 1770, the son of Juan Ignacio Gutiérrez de Cabiedes, and Bárbara Bonilla y Montera. He signed the Act of Independence of 20 July 1810 and worked for the independence cause as a lawyer and politician. He married Josefa Ballén de Guzmán, one of the richest women in Bogotá, who like Gutiérrez, had attended the Buen Gusto tertulias. (Monsalve, 179)
He contributed to Semanario and his Cartas de Suba were the first cry for liberty, reclaiming the rights of the Americas.

He attended the banquet to show loyalty to Fernando VII in Bogotá on 11 September 1808, at which he recited a verse dedicated to the King (see text below). (Monsalve, 30)

He emigrated to Casanare with Serviez, Monsalve claims it is still not known if he was shot on 25 October 1816. (Monsalve, 156)
