Biography:
Born in Cajamarca, Peru, from a noble Spanish family. When Simón Bolívar arrived in Cajamarca the widowed Castañeda presented her two sons to him saying she had nothing more to offer him than her beloved sons. They fought alongside Bolívar and when independence was secure, they settled in Arequipa. Castañeda, left alone stated that mothers had a duty to allow their sons to fight for freedom.
