Biography:
A dramatist, born in 1802, Colombia. He wrote plays in the neoclassic style seeking the rehabilitation of indigenous groups. He was excessively romantic and sentimental. He also wrote academic pieces. His most well known is Las convulsiones. He translated Goldoni. Much has been written about his work, but his attempt to assassinate el Libertador has overshadowed his reputation (no further details). (Arciniegas, 689-690.)

He wrote patriotic poems. He joined a failed conspiracy against Bolívar. Vargas Tejada escaped and lived in a cave for 14 months. He went mad and died in 1829. (Coester, 71)
