The son of Francisco Sanz de Santamaría and Petronila Prieto y Ricaurte (who were involved in the Comuneros rebellion), and brother of Manuela Sanz de Santamaría. He attended the Buen Gusto tertulias in Bogotá. He was exiled for his part in the independence cause in 1816. His sister-in-law was Josefa Antonia Baraya. (Monsalve, 24)
