The Oidor de Quito, he was involved with the Chillo conspirators. After their plot was discovered in 1809, they continued to hold clandestine meetings under the pretext of family gatherings. The Marquesa de Selva Alegre used to attend his tertulias, as did Nicolás de la Peña, Rosa Zárate and Manuela Cañizares. (Monsalve, 39)
