From a rich, upper class Bogotá family, she married José María Arrubia, a patriot who used his fortune for the independence cause. He was executed by the royalists in September 1816, leaving Herrera with a young son. The royalists confiscated what was left of Arrubia's wealth leaving Herrera penniless. (Monsalve, 162)
