From Bogotá, she was the daughter of José Nicolás de Rivas and Ventura Quijano. Her grandparents were Miguel de Rivas and Rosalía Zailorda and Ignacio Quijano and Catalina Venegas. She later married Luis Umaña Barrero. On August 1819 she was among a group of 20 young women from distinguished families presented to Bolívar when he arrived at Bogotá in triumph.
