Born in 1790, he is described by O’Leary as "a man of colour. His parents most miserably poor." Yet, “the most extraordinary” of the greatest men produced by the South American Revolution. (Humphreys, 12, 37)
He married Dominga Ortiz.
Lynch describes his relationship with Bolívar as "uneasy". He became President of Venezuela in 1830 after taking Venezuela out of Gran Colombia. He died in 1873. (Lynch, xx)
