The daughter of General Pedro Fortoul, she married mercenary Thomas Manby in Bogotá in 1836 after Mary English had suggested her as a suitable bride. She was from a wealthy family and related to President Santander. The marriage was advantageous to both Fortoul and Manby: she brought economic security; he "enlarged [Pedro Fortoul's] circle of business contacts and [expanded] his commercial networks".
