From Popayán, she was the aunt of "El sabio Caldas".
An intelligent, aristocratic woman, a staunch royalist, described as varonil, aunt of Francisco José de Caldas (a first cousin of Camilo Torres), a doctor of law, who was executed by Morillo on 29 October 1816. She confronted Juan Sámano, who had guarantied Caldas's life and slapped his face after accusing him of his lack of honour, him infamy and the cowardly assassination. (Monsalve, 172)
She begged Colonel Juan Sámano to pardon her nephew, "El sabio Caldas" and was promised that he wouldn't be shot. She then went to the cuartel where he was imprisoned, faced his captors defiantly, and said: "You're a disgrace! Any man who doubts the word of a woman is not a gentleman and only deserves this." And raising her hand she slapped him across the face. She then left without another word. (Hincapie Borda, 156)
