From Quito, he married Rosa Zárate. They fled Quito in December 1812 when the independence movement was quashed, but were captured and executed in 1813. (Knaster, 492).
In 1809, Manuela Sáenz is said to have watched him being paraded through the streets of Quito and this increased her sympathy for the independence cause. (Carvajal, 43)
He attended Baquijano's pro-independence tertulias in Quito in 1809. (Monsalve, 39)
