Born in 1778, his father was Ambrosio O'Higgins, an Irishman who worked for Spain and who became Marques de Osorno in 1796 and Captain general of Chile from 1788 to 1796 and then Viceroy of Peru until his death in 1801. He was educated in England where under the influence of Miranda he supported the independence cause in 1810. He became commander-in-chief in 1813. He was defeated at Rancagua in 1814 and joined forces with San Martín in Mendoza. He was appointed supreme director of independent Chile, but resigned in 1823 and went to Peru. He died in 1842.
