He was born in Buenos Aires in 1807, the brother of Juan Cruz Varela. He is mentioned among the "romantic" exiled Argentines. He attacked Rosas through the press. Rosas ordered his assassination and he was killed outside his house in 1848. (Coaster, 137-138, 169)
