The Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Imperialism Revisited, and the Language of International Law

The Human Rights Law Centre, in partnership with the Centre for Rights and Justice at Nottingham Trent University, co-hosted an online, rapid-response seminar in light of the Russian invasion of, and on-going armed conflict in Ukraine. 

The seminar was chaired by Dr. Thamil Venthan Ananthavinayagan (University of Nottingham) and Dr. Luigi Daniele (Nottingham Trent University). Speakers included:

  • Olympia Bekou, Professor of Public International Law and Head of the School of Law at University of Nottingham
  • Marko Milanović, Professor of Public International Law and Co-Director of the Human Rights Law Centre at University of Nottingham
  • Victor Kattan, Nottingham Senior Research Fellow at University of Nottingham
  • Bettina Renz, Professor of International Security, School of Politics and International Relations at University of Nottingham
  • Nigel White, Professor of Public International Law and Deputy Head of the School of Law at University of Nottingham

The seminar featured interventions from Ukrainian University of Nottingham law students, Yaroslava Yudina (Human Rights Law LLM) and Anastasiia Kliuha (Human Rights Law LLM). We were also joined by Nottingham Trent University alumnus Ruslan Saatov (LLM Human Rights) who was able to participate in the seminar virtually from Kyiv.
