This screening is hosted by the Human Rights Law Centre (HRLC), University of Nottingham, and marks the launch of our newly established Refugee Clinic. The screening is free to attend and will take place on Wednesday 26 February at 1pm, at Broadway Cinema, Nottingham. Tickets can be booked here.
After the screening there will be an opportunity for networking and to hear about the work of HRLC's Forced Migration Unit and other upcoming HRLC events, such as our 21st Annual Conference - Forced to Flee: when migration is the only alternative.
HRLC's Refugee Clinic
HRLC's Refugee Clinic operates in collaboration with Across Borders and Saint Andrews Refugee Services (StARS). StARS is a Cairo based organisation, established in 1979 to improve the quality of life of refugees and vulnerable migrants in Egypt. The screening is free to attend, however if you wish to support the work of StARS you can do so by donating to Across Borders here.
The Clinic is a first of its kind in the UK, UoN students will be undertaking placements in the Clinic where they will be working remotely with legal advisers from StARS Refugee Legal Aid Program (RLAP) helping to draft closing statements for Refugee Status Determination (RSD) applications with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Cairo.
The Film
For Sama is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her.
Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice– whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.
The film is the first feature documentary by Emmy award-winning filmmakers, Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts.
