Professor Aoife Nolan to advise UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on Children's Rights and the Environment

Professor Aoife Nolan, Co-Director of the Human rights Law Centre has been invited to join the advisory board to UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on its forthcoming General Comment No.26 on children’s rights and the environment with a special focus on climate change. This General Comment, which the Committee decided to draft in June 2021 will provide authoritative guidance to State Parties to undertake all appropriate legislative, administrative and other measures for a child-rights approach to environmental issues with a special focus on climate change.

As an advisory board member, Professor Nolan will be providing substantive expertise and strategic guidance which will inform the development of the General Comment. This will draw on her research on children’s rights, the environment and future generations.  Professor Nolan has previously worked closely with a number of UN treaty bodies and played a significant advisory role with regard to the drafting of the Committee’s 2016 General Comment No.19 on public budgeting for the realization of children’s rights.

More information on the draft general comment and the current work can be found on the Committee’s webpage  and at General Comment.
