It is with huge sadness that we at the Human Rights Law Centre share the news of the sudden death on Monday of our friend and colleague, Agnes Flues.
We send our deepest sympathies to her partner and family.
Agnes was an exceptional friend and colleague. She made an outstanding contribution to the HRLC and was its backbone for many years, starting as a student intern in 2008 and ultimately serving as its coordinator for a decade.
Agnes brought her keen intelligence and commitment to social justice and human rights to bear in all parts of her life. This was not just clear in her work with the Centre but also in her extensive and consistent support for and collaboration with students and colleagues, including her leadership role with the University College Union. She was an outstanding citizen in the broadest sense of the word − within her Nottingham community, the University, and the international human rights and social justice ecosystem more broadly.
Her subject expertise, international background (including degrees from the University of Padua and the European Inter-University Centre) and tri (plus!) lingualism, combined with unflappable competence and an understated, hilariously dry sense of humour meant she was wonderful to work with. She was also a loyal and supportive friend.
We know that many of you will have stories of Agnes’ kindness, quiet leadership and legendary efficiency. There is a public space for sharing memories here. If you would prefer to share them privately, please send them to hrlc@nottingham.ac.uk and we will make sure they are shared with her partner and family.
She is irreplaceable and we will miss her enormously.
