Prof Aoife Nolan Re-Elected as President of European Committee of Social Rights of the Council of Europe

The Human Rights Law Centre (HRLC) is delighted to announce that Aoife Nolan, Professor of International Human Rights Law and Director of the Human Rights Law Centre, was re-elected as President of the European Committee of Social Rights on 22 January 2025, for a new term of  two years. Professor Nolan will continue to lead the Committee in its work in monitoring state efforts to give effect to the European Social Charter.

Professor Nolan stated, “I'm delighted to have been re-elected President of the Council of Europe European Committee of Social Rights, Europe’s leading economic and social rights monitoring mechanism. It is a very exciting time for the Charter system and it is a huge honour to be part of it and to collaborate with such a great team of colleagues to push forward social rights enjoyment across Europe”.

The Committee is a body of the Council of Europe tasked with monitoring the honouring of international human rights law commitments entered into under the Charter by the State Parties. It uses two complementary mechanisms: a quasi-judicial collective complaints procedure and a state reporting process.

Professor Nolan was first elected as President of the Committee in January 2022, having been a member since 2017 and previously serving as the Committee’s Vice-President. She is a leading international expert in the field of economic and social rights, which have been a focus of her research and policy engagement activities throughout her academic career.
