Description

Ross Balzaretti's professorial inaugural lecture for the Department of History

Join Professor Rossano Balzaretti the next in the series of inaugural lectures from the School of Humanities at University of Nottingham.

There will be an introduction from Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Faculty of Arts Professor Jeremy Gregory and the talk will be followed by a drinks reception.

Encounters with Italy: in the field, the archive and the classroom

This lecture approaches the history of Italy via a series of encounters with places, things and people, dead or alive. Through stories about these encounters, I will show how history matters to me. I will examine twenty-five years of fieldwork in Liguria, some fascinating documents and objects I have met in archives and reflect on what I have learnt from the many students I have had the pleasure of teaching. The stories I will tell tend to be about collaboration, as that is the direction in which my career has gone in the last twenty years. I will advocate for teaching-led research alongside research-led teaching and for engaging with the public. In time honoured fashion I will consider what universities are for, and I hope by the end to have made a convincing case for my subject and why it should remain an important part of our educational system and our lives.
