Description
WW1 Discovery Day

WW1 Today - For Community groups thinking of organising their own First World War projects

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has been active in supporting a wide range of community projects across the UK to mark the centenary of World War 1 (WW1). These projects have focussed on a very broad variety of subjects, not just on the military aspects of 1914-18 but also the cultural and societal impacts the war had upon the lives of people and communities.

This free event, held at The City Rooms in Leicester, is aimed at any community groups who have an idea for a First World War project, regardless of its scale, the stage of development it has reached, or whether you have funding. Groups who have successfully completed HLF-funded projects will talk about their experiences of developing and running them, and expert advice will be on hand from the WW1 engagement centre teams* to assist participants in developing their projects. Advisers from the HLF will talk through some of the practical aspects of applying, and there will be a forum for individuals and groups to discuss their ideas. The Heritage Lottery Fund’s development team will offer a masterclass on applying for project funding. During the session, you will learn how to plan a project and put together a high quality application. There will also be practical guidance on value for money, HLF’s outcomes framework and the difference your project should make.

As well as funding projects through established programmes such as ‘Our Heritage’, ‘Young Roots’ and ‘Heritage Grants’, the HLF have awarded well over 1,500 awards through the ‘First World War: Then and Now’ scheme. This is suitable for smaller-scale projects, with grants ranging from £3,000 to £10,000. The application process is streamlined and around two-thirds of the projects funded by this scheme have been first-time applicants.

* Working in partnership with the HLF, five WW1 public engagement centres have been established to connect academic researchers with community researchers and develop closer collaborations on WW1 heritage projects during the Centenary period. This discovery day and showcase event reflects the partnership between the HLF, its funded community WW1 heritage projects, and the five university-based WW1 public engagement centres, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

This event is free but booking is recommended.
