We are always looking to improve the quality of our students’ learning experiences. Recently, this impulse has led us to introduce some new features to some of our joint honours courses.
We have devoted particular attention to our popular History and Politics BA programme, which now includes a level two module that caters to the specific needs of its students. Co-taught by Dr Dean Blackburn (History) and Professor Steven Fielding (Politics), it helps students to navigate the divide between history and political science and encourages them to engage with some big questions that relate to both disciplines. At the beginning of the course, for instance, students investigate where political change comes from and assess whether conflict is an inevitable feature of human societies.
By engaging with these questions, and by exploring ways that historians and political scientists have attempted to answer them, the module not only equips students with a better understanding of the world in which they live, but also develops the sort of skills that students will need in their final year of undergraduate study.
