Call for Papers: Cultures of Occupation: Establishing a Transnational Dialogue

Cultures of Occupation: Establishing a Transnational Dialogue is a 3-day conference at the University of Nottingham, organised through the ERC-funded Cultures of Occupation in Twentieth Century Asia (COTCA) project. The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars from a range of disciplines, backgrounds and countries to explore the fundamental question which drives the COTCA project itself: "How does 'foreign occupation' (broadly defined) influence cultural expression?".

Proposals for individual 20-minute papers, or for panels of three papers (no discussants required), are welcome from scholars at all stages of their careers (including early career researchers and doctoral students). 

Possible themes for papers might include (but are not limited to):

• The development of visual and/or auditory cultures under foreign occupation
• Comparative studies of cultural expression or cultural production under occupation
• Artistic, musical, literary, or architectural responses to―or everyday forms of cultural expression under―occupation
• Challenging the 'collaboration'/'resistance' dichotomy when examining culture under occupation
• The gendering of cultural expression and cultural production under occupation
• Cultural expression and historical memory of wartime or other forms of occupation

The deadline is 4pm on Wednesday 31 May 2017. All abstracts to be submitted to Dr Jeremy Taylor.
