Dr Sarah Badcock has released her new book A Prison Without Walls? Eastern Siberian exile in the last years of Tsarism (Oxford University Press) and has accompanied the release with two youtube videos, discussing themes within the publication.
Dr Badcock’s book looks at the daily life of eastern Siberian convicts and their dependants, focussing on their history to draw a larger picture of the Russian Empire. In doing so, she frames our understanding of how the late Imperial Russian State functioned, contributes to the broader comparative understandings of punishment and draws on materials that have never been used before in English-language scholarship.
