History Second Year Volunteering success

Congratulations to second-year student Jade-Louise Jacobs (BA History and East European Cultural Studies), who was a runner-up in the 2018 Student Union Volunteering Awards (Going the Extra Mile category).

Jade volunteered on the Department’s History in Schools programme, in which students design and deliver historical sessions in primary schools across Nottingham, typically in areas of high socio-economic and educational disadvantage. Jade worked with a group of Year 2 children at Old Basford Primary School, where she ran taster sessions designed to stimulate children’s enthusiasm for history. Jade was particularly commended for her sourcing of artefacts from Manuscripts & Special Collections for her work in school, and her (unprecedented) delivery of these sessions by herself. Commenting on Jade’s efforts, the class teacher praised, ‘The artefacts which were brought into the school for the sessions - the pupils absolutely loved them!’, and ‘The commitment and enthusiasm of the volunteer [which] made the sessions even more amazing, especially as they ran them on their own.’ Congratulations to Jade – a wonderful ambassador for History!
