We're very pleased to announce that Dr Martina Salvante will be joining us from September as an Assistant Professor in the Deprtment of History!

Read a brief introduction to their current research below:

I am very pleased to join the Department of History at the University of Nottingham and its lively research community. I look forward to working with brilliant colleagues who strongly believe in the significance of designing and delivering a first-rate and innovative research-led teaching programme.

I specialise in the social and cultural history of Modern Italy and Europe and I have a particular interest in topics like fascism, gender, sexuality, the First World War and disability. My work has extensively focused on the interrelationship between gender and nation, while recently my attention has shifted to the intersection between gender and disability. I have been increasingly interested in examining the spaces and practices of negotiations between individuals and the state.

Whilst at the University of Nottingham, I will continue working on my project on Italian disabled veterans of the First World War in transnational perspective. This research looks into both experiences and representations of war disability in Italy from 1917 until 1939, thus investigating the last years of the conflict, the postwar transformations and the rise and consolidation of fascism.

Best,

Martina
