The Persecution and Murder of the Jews by Nazi Germany, 1933-1945

'The Persecution and Murder of the Jews by Nazi Germany, 1933-1945' is a 16-volume series comprising thousands of documents on the Holocaust. The series originally appeared in German and the volumes are now appearing in English, with original documents translated from a total of more than 20 languages. The series is unique in scope, covering the German Reich from 1933 and the whole of Nazi-occupied Europe during the Second World War, and it offers multiple perspectives on the events. The sources range from official regulations and police reports to personal letters and diaries written by persecuted Jews. Each volume contains an in-depth introduction contextualizing the particular geographical area and time period covered by the volume.

The volumes that have appeared so far cover the German Reich and the Protectorate up to 1941 (3 volumes); Western and Northern Europe, 1940-1945 (2 volumes); and occupied Poland, 1939-1945 (2 of 3 volumes have already appeared).

The project is edited on behalf of the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History Munich-Berlin, the Modern History Research Group at the University of Freiburg, and the German Federal Archives, and it is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG).

For further information about the project and sample documents from the volumes that have already appeared in English, please see the project website.

Since September 2020, Prof. Elizabeth Harvey (History/Humanities) has been seconded full-time to lead the project, with the financial support of the DFG.
