Description

Community Open Day

The University is inviting everyone to visit for a free, fun and interactive day for all ages and interests.

Do you enjoy exploring the truth behind things? Philosophers invite you to expand your mind by discussing a variety of topical and modern issues including beauty, image, money and art.

That isn’t art! 11.30am - 12.30pm

Should people get paid vast sums for an unmade bed or a pile of bricks? Is modern art ‘better’ or ‘worse’ than other types of art? What is art anyway?

Do we have a duty to give money to the poor? 12.30pm -1.30pm

The world is full of inequality. A missile costs millions, a watch can cost tens of thousands, but a plate of rice which could save someone’s life, only costs pennies. Do we have a duty to redistribute this wealth?

Beauty and Image - do you really choose? 2.00pm - 3.00pm (adult content)

Have you ever wondered why do people choose to wear what they do? Why do some choose to have surgery? Should we censor advertising?

What do we know? 3.30pm - 4.00pm

Is the only thing we really know our own minds? Do we even know that? What about things we can’t see? What is it to know something anyway? These talks will engage both the young and old in fun interactive discussions about the topic areas featured.

Location: Portland Building, D floor, room D137
