Winner of the David Garlick essay competition announced

Congratulations to our 2023 David Garlick essay competition winner:

Stuart Brown, of the Royal Grammar School Guildford

Stuart’s essay was entitled, ‘How the criticisms of Utilitarianism underline a fundamental error in our approach to ethical discourse’.

Our judges commented, ‘This is a very well written piece with a strong argument, which shows detailed and nuanced understanding of the issues.’ Stuart receives £100 in book tokens as his prize.

You can download the winning essay here (PDF).

The Garlick Prize is named in memory of a former student, David Garlick, who made a generous bequest to the department, and is intended to promote our joint disciplines of Theology and Religious Studies. As part of the annual competition, the Department of Theology and Religious Studies invites A Level students to submit an essay on any subject within the A level syllabus. This could include theology, philosophy, ethics, and world religions.
